Heather N. Kaplan
ATTORNEY AT LAW
Ms. Kaplan was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1976. She moved to Long Island with her family while she attended Brooklyn College. After she graduated from undergraduate school, she attended Hofstra University School of Law. She graduated in 2002 and was admitted to practice law in the State of New York in January of 2003.
She began her career as an attorney representing doctors in medical malpractice actions in New York State Supreme Court. She regularly appeared in the New York State Appellate Courts and conducted extensive oral arguments, depositions and trials. In 2007, she became focused on Workers’ Compensation and began to practice law not only in the New York Supreme Court but at the Workers’ Compensation Board.
Ms. Kaplan is an accomplished litigator and has achieved excellent results at the Workers’ Compensation Board, New York Supreme Court and at the Appellate Courts.
Ms. Kaplan taught college and graduate level classes at Cornell University Satellite School and at Long Island University for a total of ten years. She taught Employment Law and Discrimination, Business Ethics and Labor, Unions & Employment Relations.
Heather Kaplan is also admitted to the United States District Court, Southern District. She is also a member of the New York Insured Workers’ Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the New York Injured Workers' Bar Association.
Ms. Kaplan currently resides on Long Island with her husband and three daughters.
Tiana Rooney
ATTORNEY AT LAW
Ms. Rooney is an associate attorney with the firm. She is a lifelong Long Island resident. She Graduated a year early, Summa Cum Laude, from St. Joseph’s College, where she received a bachelors in Business Administration and Accounting. Ms. Rooney additionally holds a Masters in Global Security Studies from Johns Hopkins University, where she will graduate Summa Cum Laude. She attended St. John’s University School of Law and graduated in 2020. She passed the October 2020 bar exam in the midst of the pandemic.
Ms. Rooney joined the HNK team in July 2019 as a law clerk and has been working to resolve many client issues during her tenure at the firm. While her focus had always been employment law, Ms. Rooney has developed a special interest in workers' compensation law.
When she is not at work in our office she can be found reading a good political thriller.
Lisa Kleinman
OFFICE MANAGER
Lisa joined the HNK team in the summer of 2020. She works closely with the insurance company representatives to negotiate settlements/resolutions on behalf of our clients. Her vast knowledge of workers' compensation law and her kind disposition make her a "go to" contact for many of our clients.
Lisa lives on Long Island with her husband and three children. She enjoys making gourmet chocolate treats and used to manage a chocolate shop!
Brittany Garavelli
CLIENT LIAISON
Brittany is an essential part of our Port Jefferson office. She assists our clients with all aspects of their claims. From initial consultations to critical updates, Brittany is available to our clients every step of the way.
Brittany also coordinates many of our firms’ events, including our very popular dinner seminars.
Brittany graduated from Binghamton University and received her Master’s degree at Queens College. She taught elementary school for several years before she became a mother. She joined our firm in 2018. She resides on Long Island with her husband and two children.
Alejandra Kaplan
CLIENT RELATIONS ADVOCATE/SPANISH TRANSLATOR
Upon the opening of our Port Jefferson office, we were lucky to have Alejandra join our team. She is our client relations advocate and our Spanish translator. She works for the Firm on a part time basis and specializes in assisting our non-English speaking clients.
Alejandra was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has lived in the United States for more than 50 years. She holds various advanced college degrees, Long Island University, Empire State College and Stony Brook University. She has facilitated a lifelong dream of becoming a foreign language educator. She was a middle, junior, and high school teacher for 25 years before her retirement.
Julia Kaplan
EVENTS COORDINATOR/LEGAL ASSISTANT
Julia has taken a special interest in our firm's charitable events. Since she joined the HNK team, she has now taken over the planning and coordinating of our events. She has already planned our 2021 Fun in the Sun Event and is working on our Back To School Drive for later in the year. She also works with our clients to plan and prepare them for their upcoming hearings.
As a full-time high school honors student, Julia also enjoys playing guitar and singing.
Rachel Bookman
RECEPTIONIST/LEGAL ASSISTANT
Rachel is a new member of the HNK team. She is eager to meet and work with our clients. She is a native Long Islander and speaks both English and Spanish.

Kiko
COM-PAW-SATION SPECIALIST
Kiko is a vital part of our team, starting his employment at our firm in January 2022 at the young age of 8-weeks old! Talk about driven!
Kiko's day-to-day responsibilities include greeting clients, shredding papers, delivering mail, and, of course, organizing the office's stick collection.
When he is not working, he can be found napping in front of a heater, playing with toys, or sampling lunches.
Be sure to tell Kiko he is a good boy if you see him!
